Gallup poll says that 8 out of 10 Americans are eating at fast food restaurants about once a month and half of us once a week – we’re lovin’ it, right?
Let’s see how much we’re lovin’ it after we run down a list of the most disgusting food facts you can dig up and it’s not just all fast-food delight, some of the stuff might be in your pantry so let’s point counter point this out.
1. Cheez Whiz Or Velveeta Is Not Exactly A Cheese
It’s more like a cheese product with 51 percent of that cheese with being made up of ingredients like emulsifiers, carrageenan, seaweed extract, stabilizer and flavorings like citric acid for that delicious cheese-like taste. Besides, you are buying your cheese in a non-refrigerated grocery aisle, what did you expect?
2. Processed Food In US
If you live in the US and you eat processed foods, what you may be munching on a few bugs or rodent hairs.
The US Food and Drug Administration allows a certain number of critters and their junk to infiltrate processed food. For example, a can of mushrooms is allowed to have up to 19 maggots and that same portion can acceptably contain up to 74 mites.
3. Chicken Nuggets Is Not Made Of Chickens
When you eat a chicken nugget, you may be eating mechanically separated meat. So what we’re talking about is grind meat – no big deal, right? – except that some companies use a method of separating edible meat tissue including tendons, muscles fibers and the bones. The whole thing comes up kind of paste and is molded into nuggets and baked.
BUT, before you drop your bag of McKinney to the garbage, take heart that McDonald’s is adamant that they don’t use this process and they use all white boneless chickens to make their nuggets.
4. Pink Slime
Pink slime or what USDA calls LFTB (lean finely textured beef) is still in the meat supply and some of that supply is used in schools. Now, pink slime is different from mechanically separated meat. Centrifuges are used to separate lean meat from fat – we’re talking about scrap meat cleaning to the cavity of a cow’s gut. The problem is that the meat could contain harmful bacteria so the meat gets treated with ammonia to kill off bacteria and the result is called pink slime and it’s found in all sorts of goodies like bologna, hotdog, salami, pepperoni, beef jerky and of course ground meat.
BUT, according to USDA, the process used to produce LFTB is safe and has been for a long time.
5. More Bugs In Your Food
That delicious glass of grapefruit juice or that perfectly pink peach hue in your yogurt is compliments of a few bugs. Food manufacturers are purposely using insects called Dactylopius coccus Costa, which feeds on red cactus fairies. These critters are ground up in powder and they are used in process pink purple or red foods and you’ll find them on the ingredient list under the name of cochineal extract or sometimes carmine or carminic acid.
BUT, that might be one of the more natural additives in your processed food when you think other chemicals that are used in processed foods.
6. Humble Fake Egg
The humble egg you find sitting in your neatly wrapped breakfast sandwich is neither humble nor really a true egg. That yellow lump sitting atop of bread is premium egg blend. Premium? That must have some really good stuff in it. Let’s see,
- Glycerin – a common ingredient in soap and shaving cream,
- Silicon – the stuff you find in Silly Putty,
- Calcium Silicate – an anti-caking agent.
7. Feces Are Everywhere
The FDA says that your cinnamon that you bought at the store can carry up to 1 milligram of animal excrement per pound and how are you to know your oregano could contain wood shavings for all you know.
BUT, according to microbiologist Stanley Falco, the world is covered in a fine patina of feces.
8. You Eat Wood
Speaking of wood shavings – they could be in your ice cream and cheese. I’m talking about powdered cellulose, minuscule pieces of wood pulp or other plant fibers that coat the cheese and keep it from clumping by blocking out moisture.
BUT, cellulose, which also gives plants their structure is digestible by humans and can add fiber to the diet.
9. You Also Eat Poop
That color dispenser might have traces of poop on it. In 2010, a study by microbiologists at Hollins University 48 percent of soda fountains at fast food restaurants they studied contained coliform bacteria – a bacteria that commonly grows on animal and human waste.
BUT, did I ever mention to you that the world is covered in a fine patina of feces?
10. You Are What You Can Afford
If you want to eat nutritious whole food, you’re going to pay for it. 27 studies in 10 countries researchers publishing and the British Medical Journal found unhealthy food is about a $50 cheaper per day than healthy food.
BUT, Bill Gates says “If you’re born poor, it’s not your mistake. But if you die poor, it is your mistake.” so you know what to do.
